Across all the STEM subjects: New innovative master's program
Next winter semester, the University of Bremen will be offering a new interdisciplinary degree program across all the STEM subjects. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The program ProMat stands for process-oriented materials research and is designed to give students a lot of freedom. Moreover, they are integrated into research from the first semester to their graduation. Prospective students have until September 15 before the closing date for applications.
“With this degree program, we are breaking new ground in the German-speaking world,” explains program director Professor Lucio Colombi Ciacchi. “We want to give students as much freedom as possible to design their own curriculum so that the selected study content can be optimally adapted both to personal interests as well as to the skills already acquired in the context of a STEM bachelor’s”.
Degree programs are carried out by all five STEM departments
The name of the program ProMat - Process-Oriented Materials Research emphasizes the close connection to the University of Bremen’s MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes. This is where researchers from all disciplines of the natural and engineering sciences as well as industrial mathematics and materials informatics work together in interdisciplinary cooperation. The ProMat master’s program is designed as an interdisciplinary educational path for early-career researchers in the research topics of MAPEX and is jointly supported by all five STEM departments at the University of Bremen.
Students can choose content from a wide range of subjects
ProMat addresses the growing complexity of interdisciplinary issues in the broad field of materials science and materials technology in a special way: In five basic modules, students first gain comprehensive foundation knowledge in the basic STEM disciplines of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and tools of computer science. Then, in two specialization modules, they acquire theoretical, applied and practical skills. The special feature here is that the students choose the actual contents of these seven modules from the range of more than 350 courses offered across all the STEM departments. The research and international orientation of the degree program is ensured by the module "Research Processes" and a compulsory, at least eight-week research stay abroad.
Integrated in research from the outset
All ProMat students are integrated into research in their first semester and right up to their graduation. This is achieved via the special individual support offered by the ProMat teaching faculty. “One-to-one mentoring has many benefits,” explains the program coordinator, Dr. Iva Bačić. “The students are involved in the research groups of their mentors, working actively with them and gaining direct access to international research networks, for example by attending conferences and workshops as well as through the research stay anchored in the curriculum”. The study program ProMat thus offers targeted preparation for a subsequent doctorate and further career steps in their academic career.
Delivered in German and English
The standard period of study for ProMat is four semesters (120 credit points) and the courses are offered in English as well as German. Graduates are awarded the title “Master of Science”. Enrollment in the program is possible every semester.
