4th International „Computational Reliability Engineering (CRE)” Symposium 2018
The fourth Computational Reliability Engineering in Product Development and Manufacturing (CRE) Symposium was organized in 2018 in Poland by the Chair of Reliability Engineering and Risk Analytics of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Bracke. For the first time it took three days with two days of presentations and an excursion to the Remontowa Shipyard in Danzig. Due to the international character, the symposium took place in Gdynia, Poland, from September 5th to 7th, 2018.
There was an excellent cooperation with the Chair of Navigation of Prof. Jakub Montewka of the Gdynia Maritime University. Though, as a result of the support and co-organization, the rooms of the Faculty of Navigation in Gdynia (Poland) were available for the symposium. The 4th CRE Symposium was sponsored by Gdynia Maritime University (Poland), Meji University of Tokyo (Japan), HBM Prenscia from Warsaw (Poland), diondo GmbH from Hattingen, University of Wuppertal and the IAP GmbH from Cologne. As usual, guests from science and industry took part as presenters as well as participants. The research community was represented by scientists from the University of Tokyo (Japan), the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, the Meji University of Tokyo (Japan), the University of Electro-Communications UEC Tokyo (Japan), Gdynia Maritime University (Poland), Leibniz University Hannover, the Fraunhofer Institute from Fürth and the University of Wuppertal. In addition, representatives of the following companies were attending the symposium: TRUMPF GmbH & Co. KG, Valeo S.A., Continental AG, Babtec GmbH, HBM Prenscia Inc. and Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH.
The first two days (05.09.2018 and 06.09.2018) of the symposium included a total of 13 presentations followed by discussions at the location of the Faculty of Navigation of the Gdynia Maritime University. The following topics were focused: Product and process reliability, condition monitoring and process control, uncertainty analysis, failure and reliability prognosis, risk research and sustainability engineering.
On the first day, the Gdynia Maritime University presented an assessment of the possible impact of unmanned ships on maritime safety. Valeo S.A. presented new methods and tools for reliability forecasting and data mining in the automotive industry. The Cologne University of Applied Sciences discussed strategies to improve the reliability of non-MEMS micro manufacturing for mass production. TRUMPF presented the use of SPICE modelling in the field of reliability evaluation of power electronic converters. The last lecture of the first day by Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH dealt with reliability technology and monitoring of complex optical systems.
On the second day, the University of Tokyo presented a method for the consideration of uncertainties in system-of-systems, and the Meji University showed a method for modular design considering the worldwide supply chain. The Gdynia University introduced critical indicators for the reliability, security and resilience of the infrastructure, as well as the application of indicators within a software package. The next presentation was given by HBM Prenscia and dealt with the automatic failure prediction of S.M.A.R.T. drives. It was followed by the first Postdoc / PhD-, Master-Session which included three presentations: The first topic "The application of a Condition Monitoring System" was presented by the Chair of Reliability Engineering and Risk Analytics which focused on the topics condition monitoring systems and machine learning and presented the developed software tool for condition monitoring of complex machines. The remaining two topics about environmental friendly and economical material selection and multi-generational product and modularization for component expansion were presented by the young researchers from Japan.
The character of the fourth CRE Symposium 2018 was given by the venue, the neighbourhood including the harbour and the main topics of the Maritime Academy Gdynia of shipbuilding. Due to this fact, the Remontowa Shiprepair Yard S.A. in Gdansk was visited on the third day (07.09.2018) of the symposium. In addition to a particular presentation with the title “Shipbuilding in individual and small series production“ followed by the discussion, some parts of the shipyard were visited during the guided tour. The viewing of the shipyard included the introduction to the elementary manufacturing steps as well as the finishing of the shipbuilding. The focus of the following technical discussions were the topics of safety and reliability technology regarding the increase on demands of international shipping and autonomous shipping operations. The visit of the European Centre of Solidarity concluded the symposium.

The fifth CRE Symposium with the University of Wuppertal as a host and organizer is planned to take place in 2019 - presumably in cooperation with the University of Padua (Italy).
